Design Philosophy

Jim Friesz is the founder and principal of his Seattle-based architectural design practice, recognized for its highly collaborative approach and deep roots in the Pacific Northwest’s warm modernist tradition. His work is shaped by a strong connection to nature and a commitment to uncovering the unique story of each project to create places of meaning and character.

Three Decades of Experience

With over 30 years of experience, Jim brings a comprehensive background in architecture, ranging from large-scale civic and cultural projects to intimate residential designs. Before establishing his own firm in 2025, he was Co-Founder of Mutuus Studio (2016–2025) and previously held a range of roles at Olson Kundig (formerly Olson Sundberg), where he began his career in 1993 as an intern and advanced to Associate and Director of the Intern Program.

Featured Work

At Mutuus Studio, Jim led several notable projects including the House of Eve restaurant in Seattle’s South Lake Union, Windermere Residence, The Grocery in Beacon Hill, and North Beach House. During his tenure at Olson Kundig, his contributions included key projects such as the Foss Waterway Seaport, the Haub Wing Addition to the Tacoma Art Museum, 1111 E Pike residential mixed-use development, and multiple buildings at Whatcom Community College.

Pacific Northwest Roots

Originally from eastern Washington’s Columbia Basin and the North Cascades, Jim's early environment fostered a lasting appreciation for natural landscapes and regional identity. He earned both a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture from Washington State University in 1993.

Jim is a licensed architect in Washington (since 2006) and Montana (since 2022), and holds LEED BD+C and NCARB accreditations.
